Hemi-knee Replacement vs. Total Knee Replacement
Hemi-knee replacement gives natural and durable function.
The clinical outcomes are backed up with Oxford scores higher than Total Knee Replacement (TKR) - NZJR.
The surgeon needs to be more skilled than required for a TKR and appropriately trained.
DO NOT USE IN THE LIGAMENTOUSLY LAX, OR CASES WHERE THE LATERAL COMPARTMENT SHOWS MENISCAL EXTRUSION.
Do NOT correct tibia vara with the hemi-knee replacement
Antero-medial arthritis of the knee is seen when the Anterior Cruciate Ligament is intact.

CAUSES:
- Previous Medial Meniscectomy
- Medial Plical Band caught under the infero-medial corner of the patella, resulting in isolated antero-medial wear by way of wear to the femur then tibia (author)
- Trauma to chondral surfaces
- Malalignment (varus), but not when there is a significant tibia vara, which requires a tibial osteotomy. A BURN opening wedge can be done concurrently with the UNI!
