ABOUT US
Orthopaedic surgeons are frequently faced with new and challenging problems.
Novel solutions are frequently required.
Here in New Zealand, we embrace challenges and find solutions!
Christchurch NZ is the home of P James Burn FRACS (orthopaedic surgeon) and Paul Morrison (bio-engineer), the co-founders of Enztec Ltd and Ossis Ltd. James Burn has no financial or affiliations with Enztec or Ossis since 2023, but is happy to provide assistance to surgeons. Zimmer-Biomet now own OSSIS Ltd.
He, along with some engineering colleagues have a private manufacturing facility, "THE MACHINISTS", 5-axis machines, Polyethylene machining, Nylon additive manufacturing, a new Clean room and ETO sterilisation.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE
- Complex revision arthroplasty of the hip, knee and other joints
- Primary hip and knee surgery (including partial medial, lateral and patello-femoral replacement)
- Osteotomies of the lower limb
- Foot and ankle surgery and correction of failed foot and ankle surgeries, especially the failed Total Ankle replacement. We will provide your surgeon with the implants and technique.
- Custom design and manufacture of implants including bacterial resisting silver-coated implants
- Sports injury
- Major joint arthoplasty and revision
- Trauma and tumour reconstruction assistance
AREAS OF SPECIAL INTEREST
- Reconstruction implants for osteolysis post arthroplasty and tumour
- Polyimide MP-1 as an acetabular bearing material for use in Total Hip Replacements (Longest clinical result at 19 years. One hundred cases entered in a clinical trial which started in 2013. A retrieval at 6 years showed 6 microns of wear!) It does not induce osteolysis like polyethylenes nor show cold flow. The patients continue to be followed up 12 yrs later
- MP-1 is a high-performance polymer used in aerospace, resistant to wear, heat and can be sterilized by all modalities. It is the future for high performance total hip replacement in the younger generation. 2025: POLYIMIDE (MP-1) has now been shown to be safe for clinical use as a bearing in TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT.
- Polymers will replace Cobalt Chromium alloys in most cases of knee replacements in the near future. All polymer Total Knee Replacements were done in the 1980's with no wear issues but fixation and sterilisation needed improvement.
- Bio-active SILVER coatings on fixation devices to resist and treat active infections, results presented 2000, New Zealand Orthopaedic Association, ASM.
- The use of intra-articular catheters for the instillation of Antibiotic when revising infected joint replacements that have been referred. (Leo Whiteside et al)
- Design and manufacture of custom or complete instrumentation systems
- Design and manufacture of implants using Electron Beam Melt (EBM), made here in New Zealand. Additive manufacture with Laser sintering available also.
- Personal series of >200 Short Stem THR's (EVOLUTION from JRI) since 2013. Results outstanding and would now never use a "Corail" type stem as a primary cementless arthroplasty.
UNIQUE INNOVATIONS
THE HIP CALIBRATION GAUGE
A device used in Total Hip Replacement (THR):
|
THE STAR DRILL
A fast and reliable way to formally repair the hip joint capsule to AVOID THR dislocations and accelerate recovery. (0% dislocation rate in 1500+ consecutive postero-lateral THR cases by the author) |
THE BURN OS CALCIS PLATE
A "sequential" plate for difficult fractures. Used in Christchurch Hospital for 15 years. Many companies have "copied" but missed the essential elements.

THE BURN FIBULAR PLATE
A plate to deal with the unstable osteoporotic comminuted malleolar ankle fractures where screws are inappropriate or contraindicated.

THE UPPER TIBIAL MEDIAL OPENING WEDGE OSTEOTOMY ( can be combined with hemi-knee replacement and low risk of DVT)
(not the Puddu technique!) |
FAILED TOTAL ANKLE ARTHRODESIS FUSION SYSTEM
To salvage failed total ankle replacements. This implant system takes the stress out of obtaining a reliable fusion in good position without collapse.

ALIF LOCKED 3D TITANIUM MESH CAGES
For spinal fusion without posterior dissection.
For spinal fusion without posterior dissection.
PATIENT SPECIFIC EBM MESH AUGMENTS
To salvage Total Knee Replacements when there is major bone loss following multiple operations, or where fusions in other joints have been hard to achieve.
PATELLO-FEMORAL ARTHROPLASTY
For arthritis associated with patella-alta. 4 sizes left and right. MR scanning compatible, hypo-allergenic and TiN coated, so meniscal injury and any changes in the tibio-femoral articulations can be imaged. No need to "distalise" the tubercle. Compatible with addition of hemi-knee replacements below. Best used with the domed patella implants ( 2 cases as trochlear replacement alone)
